Our Endowments & Donors
Community Health Alliance manages and administers permanent endowments to advance healthy lives in western Montana. Proceeds from some of our endowments can be used for priorities as determined by our Board of Trustees, and others are restricted to certain health needs. Montana’s Endowment Tax Credit can make endowment gifts even more attractive to donors.
To support one of the endowments noted here, or to talk with us about establishing a named endowment, please contact our office at 406.926.2522 or Kira Huck, Executive Director, at kirah@communityhealthwmt.org.

R.H. “Ty” Robinson Legacy Club
Membership in the R. H. “Ty” Robinson Legacy Club celebrates our donors who have included Community Health Alliance in their will or trust, have given securities, or have made a planned gift such as a charitable gift annuity or trust. Whether for current use or to build endowments, support from these donors will bring health and healing to our community long into the future. And that’s the true definition of legacy – something handed on from those who have come before.
We celebrate here the donors who we have permission to recognize for their legacy gifts, through December 2019, to Community Health Alliance and our founding organization, Community Medical Center Foundation:

A Gift in Your Will or Trust
An excellent way for you to support Community Health Alliance’s mission is to leave us a gift in your will, living trust or with a codicil. One significant benefit of making such a gift is that it allows you to continue to use your asset or property you will leave to charity during your life. Another benefit is that you are able to leave a lasting legacy.
Please contact us if you have any questions about how to make a gift in your will or trust to Community Health Alliance or to request any additional information that might be helpful to you and your attorney. If you have included a gift for Community Health Alliance in your estate plan, we would appreciate you letting us know. We would like to express our appreciation and discuss recognition opportunities in the R.H. “Ty” Robinson Legacy Club.
Types of Gifts
There are a number of ways you can make a gift in your will or trust to Community Health Alliance.
- Specific: You can make a gift of a specific asset such as real estate, a car, other property or a gift for a specific dollar amount. For example, you may wish to leave your home or $10,000 to Community Health Alliance.
- Percentage: You can leave a specific percentage of your overall estate to charity. For example, you may wish to leave 10% of your estate to Community Health Alliance.
- Residual: You can make a gift from the balance of your estate. For example, you may wish to leave 30% of the residue of your estate to Community Health Alliance.
- Contingent: You can make a contingent gift which occurs only if the purpose of the primary designation cannot be met. For example, you could leave specific property, such as a vacation home, to a relative, but the language in your will could provide that if the relative is not alive at the time of your death, the vacation home will go to Community Health Alliance.
Benefits
A gift by will or trust is generally a revocable gift, which means it can be changed or modified at any time. You can choose to designate your gift for a general or specific purpose so you have the peace of mind knowing that your gift will be used as intended. Gifts by will or trust are exempt from federal estate taxes. If you have a taxable estate, the estate tax charitable deduction may offset or eliminate estate taxes, resulting in a larger inheritance for your heirs.

In order to make a gift in your will or trust, you should speak with your attorney. Your attorney can help you include a gift to Community Health Alliance in your estate plan. We have provided some basic examples of language below to support your conversation with your attorney.

Restricted Gifts
If you are considering a gift but would like to ensure that it will be used for a specific purpose, please let us know. We would be happy to work with you and your attorney to help you identify ways to give and meet your charitable objectives.
If you are making a restricted gift, we recommend that your attorney include the following provision to give Community Health Alliance flexibility should it no longer be possible for our Community Health Alliance to use your gift as you originally intended:
If, in the judgment of the Board of Trustees of Community Health Alliance, it shall become impossible for Community Health Alliance to use this gift to accomplish the specific purposes noted, Community Health Alliance may use the income and principal of this gift for such purpose or purposes as the Board determines is most closely related to the original intent of my gift.

Montana Endowment Tax Credit
Gifts with true costs of $.25 to $.50 on the dollar? That has been the case for our donors who utilize the Montana Endowment Tax Credit in their support of permanent endowments!
Since 1997, Montana law has provided a tax credit for certain types of gifts to nonprofit organizations, including Community Health Alliance. This credit is offered to individual taxpayers, small businesses, corporations and estates.
Community Heath Alliance donors who make a planned gift to a permanent endowment at Community Health Alliance may be eligible for a credit of 40 percent of the qualifying gift, to a maximum credit of $10,000. Eligible planned gifts include:
- Charitable gift annuity
- Charitable remainder or lead trust
- Retained life interest in a home or farm
- Paid up life insurance
Some businesses – “C” corporations, “S” corporations, partnerships and limited liability companies – may also qualify for the credit through outright or planned gifts to endowments. The credit passes through to partners/shareholders in proportion to their shares of ownership. Businesses are eligible for a credit of 20 percent of the qualifying outright gift and 40 percent of a planned gift to a maximum credit of $10,000 per partner/ shareholder.
The credit must be used in the year the gift was made, and can’t exceed one’s Montana tax liability. Any excess may be used as a tax deduction against Montana income. Gifts of appreciated property (securities, real estate) could provide additional capital gains tax savings.
Please contact your advisor to see if the Montana Endowment Tax Credit could be a way to leverage your charitable giving. Community Health Alliance is available to run confidential, no-obligation gift examples for your consideration. Call (406) 926-2522 or email info@communityhealthwmt.org.
